This wee fellow was patiently waiting for his turn to get to the feeder.

Song Thrush   –   They visit the garden occasionally, and after watching one trying to crack the shell of a snail in order to eat it, they will be my friends forever. I wish they would attend to that sort of pest control more often.

Erm… Too Close!   Leave a comment

The frying pan – aka bird bath – attracted a horde of garden birds during the hot days we had, particularly lots of sparrows who where often competing for bath time with the very territorial blackbirds.  This cheeky sparrow took her chances while the blackbird wasn’t looking – and promptly misjudged the distance, landing her plumped up right against the big boss. Needless to say, he was a tad irritated at having his relaxing bath so rudely gate crashed, I think it shows in the facial expression ! No harm came to the wee bird though, as the bigger one was so focussed on his wash that he only made meek attempts to chase the sparrow, as she kept on dipping in and out of the water around big brother until she was done.

House sparrows   –   cooling down in their very own outdoor pool. This old frying pan has found a lot of friends among certain winged communities of late.

Always Hungry   2 comments

Blue Tits   –   A parent feeding the youngster, already almost fully grown. I wish I knew what happened to the parent though, I see him – or her? – regularly and he looks such a state.  The feathers are in an awful mess, he has definitely been through the wars somehow and somewhere, poor thing.

House Sparrow   –   As mentioned in a previous post there are quite a few of these around the garden nowadays. This male is biding his time among the apple blossom until it is his turn on the feeder.

Welcome Back   Leave a comment

House Sparrow   –   This humble species is often overlooked by bird and garden lovers as decades ago there used to be so many of them that they would often make a nuisance of themselves.  For many years we have barely seen any, though, and wondered what had happened to them. Things have suddenly picked up this year and this male is one of  a number of house sparrows now visiting. A property nearby is being renovated and their garden completely gutted at present, I am thinking that the sparrows perhaps had to move house so to speak…after being allowed to run riot in the wilderness that was for a decade or so.
